Holafly eSIM review
Discover our review of Holafly eSIM: reliable but expensive and slow to respond to customer support requests. Compare it with voilà, the ideal alternative for staying connected while traveling.

After comparing official prices with user feedback, we make a decision.

GigSky and Holafly are among the best-known travel eSIMs in 2026, but with contrasting market positions. GigSky is a pioneer founded in 2010 that relies on more than 400 partner carriers and remains the only provider to offer dedicated connectivity on cruises and flights. Holafly, on the other hand, has become the go-to choice for time-based unlimited plans among travelers who don’t want to worry about their data usage. Holafly is this year’s clear winner when comparing the two services based on overall experience and perceived value for the majority of users.
Despite this, a comparison of official rates and user reviews reveals that Holafly offers significantly better value for money than GigSky for most standard travel profiles. Continue reading this GigSky vs. Holafly comparison to discover why Holafly is the best choice for about 70% of travelers in 2026, and in which specific cases GigSky remains a strong option (cruises, offshore travel, long-term stays).

Holafly is the clear winner of the 2026 awards, having won 6 out of 10 categories: unlimited data, global coverage (260+ destinations), 24/7 support via chat and WhatsApp, mobile app, refund policy, and overall value.
GigSky comes out on top in four specific areas: lower starting prices for small data plans (starting at $4.99 for 1 GB), dedicated connectivity for cruise ships and airplanes (unique in the market), longer validity periods (up to 180 days), and unlimited data sharing on fixed-data plans.
Two things to watch out for: Holafly’s “unlimited” plan is subject to a Fair Usage Policy that throttles speeds after 2 to 5 GB per day, and data sharing is capped at 500 MB per day on standard plans. With GigSky, data sharing isn’t guaranteed on all plans, and once you reach your data limit, you’ll need to purchase a new plan or top up your account.
Choose based on your profile: Holafly is ideal for short stays, multi-country trips, or travelers who don’t want to worry about daily data usage. GigSky is perfect for cruise passengers, long stays (90+ days), and travelers who use very little data.
An alternative to consider: a travel eSIM like voilà, which offers transparent pricing, data sharing included with all plans, no blocked apps, and live customer support.
Before getting into the details, here is a summary of the results for each category tested:
Final score: Holafly wins in 6 out of 10 categories—with a clear lead in unlimited data, customer support, the app, and value. GigSky wins in 4 niche categories: entry-level rates, cruise/air travel, long durations, and connection sharing.
GigSky is inherently cheaper than Holafly for small volumes, because it offers fixed-volume plans starting at 1 GB. This has been its pricing model from the start.
GigSky offers fixed-data plans (1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 20 GB) with durations ranging from 1 to 180 days, depending on the destination. Prices start at around $4.99 for 1 GB and go up to about $80 for 10 GB on a global plan. The brand also offers dedicated plans for cruises and flights, which are unique in the market. You only pay for what you expect to use, but once you reach your limit, you’ll need to purchase a new plan or top up.
Holafly offers a simple plan: you choose the number of days (from 1 to 90), and data is unlimited for the entire period. For frequent travelers, Holafly Plans offers monthly plans starting at $39.90/month (10 GB) up to $64.90/month (unlimited with extended hotspot sharing).
| Destination (7 days) | GigSky | Holafly | Ideal Profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | ≈ $8–$15 (1–3 GB) | ≈ $29.90 (unlimited) | GigSky for light use |
| Japan | ≈ $8–$15 (1–3 GB) | ≈ $29.90 (unlimited) | GigSky for light use |
| United Kingdom | ≈ $7–$12 (1–3 GB) | ≈ $29.90 (unlimited) | GigSky for short stays |
| France | ≈ $6–$10 (1–3 GB) | ≈ $29.90 (unlimited) | GigSky when used properly |
| Europe (5–10 GB) | ≈ $20–$40 (30 days) | ≈ $74.90 (unlimited for 30 days) | GigSky: Data Mastery |
| Cruise | Single Dedicated Plan | Not available | GigSky required |
The detail that makes all the difference: if your usage is light or occasional (under 5 GB per trip), GigSky remains the more economical option. However, as soon as you want to stop worrying about daily data usage (streaming, continuous GPS, photo sharing), Holafly becomes the better value again, because one or two GigSky top-ups often cost as much as a multi-day Holafly plan.

GigSky is the better choice for light use, short trips, and cruises. Holafly is the better choice for unlimited data plans or short day trips.
On paper, GigSky lists over 200 destinations and over 400 partner carriers, while Holafly covers over 260 direct destinations. Holafly has the edge in breadth and execution quality, while GigSky excels in carrier depth.
GigSky covers more than 200 destinations through its network of over 400 partner operators, allowing the eSIM to automatically switch to the best available network in certain areas. A unique feature: the brand offers dedicated connectivity for cruises, commercial flights, and offshore areas where no other provider is present.
Holafly operates in over 260 destinations with its own exclusive plans, negotiated directly with local operators. Holafly’s global plan covers 113 countries simultaneously. The brand ensures consistent quality: no matter where you are, you’re dealing with the same Holafly and receiving the same guarantees.
Holafly for its broad consumer coverage and reliability. GigSky if you're going on a cruise, out at sea, or traveling through remote areas.
That’s the main reason travelers choose Holafly. The entire brand is built around unlimited duration, whereas GigSky sticks to a fixed volume.
GigSky does not offer truly unlimited plans. Its approach is based on fixed data allowances (ranging from 1 GB to 20 GB), which allows the company to offer low entry-level rates but requires travelers to accurately estimate their data usage, top up their plans along the way, or purchase multiple eSIMs for a long stay.
All Holafly standard plans offer unlimited data. You pay by the day, not by the gigabyte. It’s this simplicity that appeals to millions of travelers every year, especially those who aren’t tech-savvy and don’t want to keep track of their data usage down to the last byte.

Holafly by a long shot. Unlimited data is a built-in feature available in over 200 destinations, whereas GigSky doesn't offer it at all.
When it comes to internet sharing, GigSky outperforms most plans—but remains less reliable than other providers. Holafly lags behind due to its daily data cap.
At GigSky, since our plans offer a fixed data allowance, data sharing is unrestricted on most plans, with no contractual limits. Please note, however, that data sharing is not guaranteed on 100% of plans; some regional or international plans may have restrictions. Be sure to check before purchasing, depending on your destination.
Holafly's standard unlimited plans include a data-sharing limit of around 500 MB per day. Once that limit is reached, the hotspot stops working until the next day. For phone use only, this limit isn't a problem. But for someone who connects their laptop to work, 500 MB can be used up in just 30 minutes of video conferencing.
GigSky offers unlimited data sharing on most plans. Please check the details for each destination.
Both services comply with mobile security standards (carrier encryption, no storage of communication content). The real privacy concern when traveling is app blocking.
GigSky does not impose any blocking measures of its own, but certain restrictions may be imposed by local partner carriers. With some regional plans, travelers have reported that banking apps are inaccessible or that messaging apps are slow in certain countries. GigSky does not contractually guarantee that apps will not be blocked.
Holafly isn't any better. Blocking issues here, too, depend on local partner carriers. Some Asia plans block local payment apps (WeChat Pay, PayPay), while others restrict European banking apps. Holafly provides no explicit sales pitch regarding the lack of app restrictions.

It's a tie. Both rely on local carriers and do not offer a contractual guarantee of access to apps.
Both services support streaming and video calls, but they have very different features: GigSky has a data cap, while Holafly limits data speeds once a daily threshold is exceeded.
You pay for a set amount of data. With a 10 GB plan over 30 days, you can watch about 10 to 15 hours of Netflix HD before you run out. Then you have to top up or wait. The advantage: no speed throttling—you keep full speeds until the very last bit. The downside: you have to plan ahead and buy larger plans for long stays.
Unlimited data = you can watch Netflix, YouTube, and Twitch as much as you want, until the Fair Usage Policy kicks in. In practice, 2 to 3 hours of HD streaming per day is still comfortable. Beyond that (continuous 4K streaming, massive cloud backups), speeds slow down and the experience deteriorates.
| Use cases | GigSky (10 GB) | Holafly (unlimited) |
|---|---|---|
| GPS + 30 days of messages | ≈ 3 GB used, OK | OK, unlimited |
| 1 hour of HD streaming per day | Recharge required halfway through the trip | OK, under FUP |
| 3 hours of Zoom per day | ≈ 13 GB, 2x data top-up | Data cap may apply on certain days |
| Laptop tethering | Available on volume | Limited to 500 MB per day |
Holafly for easy mobile streaming and the convenience of multi-day plans. GigSky for professional video calls with unlimited data sharing—as long as you keep your data usage in check.
GigSky has the edge when it comes to long stays and unique travel options (cruises, flights, offshore trips), areas where Holafly is not present.
GigSky offers plans lasting up to 180 days for certain destinations, making it one of the few eSIMs designed for very long stays (expat assignments, round-the-world trips, extended business trips). It is also the only provider on the market to offer dedicated connectivity for cruises, commercial flights, and offshore areas. For these uses, GigSky is simply a must-have.
Holafly limits its travel plans to 90 days and does not offer cruise or flight options. For a stay of 4 to 6 months, you would therefore need to purchase two consecutive 90-day Holafly plans, which becomes less cost-effective. For regular travel requiring continuity, the Holafly Plans subscription (monthly) remains an option, but at a high cost.

GigSky for long stays, cruises, and flights. There is no direct equivalent on Holafly.
In this category, Holafly has the biggest lead over GigSky. This is also the factor that matters most when things go wrong during a trip.
GigSky relies on email and an online help center for support, with no live chat or dedicated WhatsApp channel. Response times vary: several user reviews report response times ranging from 24 to 72 hours, and responses that are sometimes generic for complex issues. The primary language of support is English.
Holafly offers 24/7 live chat accessible via the app and website, with support available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. A dedicated WhatsApp channel allows you to contact support even when your eSIM isn’t working (via your physical SIM card). Typical response times range from a few minutes to a few hours.
| GigSky | Holafly |
|---|---|
| Varies depending on the eSIM and destination | A unified policy across the board |
| Restrictive after activation | Refund if not activated within the specified time frame |
| Typical turnaround time: 1 to 2 weeks | Typical turnaround time: 3 to 7 days |
| Primary Support | Multilingual (EN, ES, FR, DE, IT, PT) |
| No live chat | 24/7 Chat and WhatsApp |
Holafly by a landslide. 24/7 multilingual chat and WhatsApp versus asynchronous email—that’s a two-generation gap in customer support.
Holafly has the edge when it comes to the mobile app. Its app is polished, highly rated, and offers built-in guides, whereas GigSky is functional but less polished.
The GigSky app lets you purchase, install, and manage your eSIMs directly from your smartphone. The user experience is decent but not as polished as Holafly’s: the design feels a bit dated, the onboarding process is minimalist, and there are few built-in guides to help first-time eSIM buyers. It’s sufficient for users who are already comfortable with eSIMs, but a bit rough around the edges for those who aren’t tech-savvy.
A clean, well-rated app (4.7/5 on the App Store, 4.6/5 on Google Play). It features guided onboarding, step-by-step setup guides for each device (iOS, Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, other Android devices), and a downloadable PDF guide for situations without an internet connection. The experience is designed for non-technical travelers who are new to eSIMs.
Holafly, clearly. An app designed for the general public, not for eSIM power users.
After comparing the 10 categories, Holafly comes out on top in most of them—with a clear lead in unlimited data, coverage, customer support, the app, and overall value. GigSky wins in entry-level pricing, connectivity on cruises and flights, long-term plans, and unlimited hotspot sharing.
For the vast majority of travelers (about 70% of users), Holafly is the best choice in 2026. The higher cost compared to GigSky is justified by the quality of the experience: a truly responsible operator handling everything from start to finish, 24/7 multilingual support via WhatsApp, one of the best apps in the industry, and unlimited data in over 200 destinations. You pay a little more, but you’re buying peace of mind.
GigSky remains a top choice in three specific situations: if you’re going on a cruise or a long-haul flight (GigSky is the only option on the market), if you’re planning a trip longer than 90 days (which Holafly doesn’t cover), or if you’re traveling light and keep your data usage under 5 GB per trip. If any of these scenarios apply to you, GigSky is unbeatable.
