SIM card for travelling in Thailand

How easy is it to get online in Thailand?

Yes, having Internet in Thailand is very easy, whether to check Google Maps, book a Grab, send messages on WhatsApp or work remotely.

Today, Thailand boasts excellent network coverage, both in terms of 4G/5G and Wi-Fi.

  • Almost all hotels, inns, resorts and guesthouses offer free Wi-Fi.
  • Cafés, restaurants, shopping malls and coworking spaces almost always have a connection available to customers.
  • Even in many more rural areas and on certain islands, a stable mobile connection is now available.

In other words, for the average traveler, it's rare to find yourself completely without a connection. Whether you're in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui or smaller towns, Internet access in Thailand is clearly part of the country's standard.

On the other hand, public Wi-Fi can be :

  • variable quality depending on location (slow at peak times, unstable in some hotels),
  • sometimes insecure,
  • and not always available when you really need it (transport, travel, excursions, etc.).

That's why, even if the Internet is easy to find locally, many travelers choose to have their own mobile connection, so as to be autonomous, permanently connected and avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Do I need a SIM card to travel to Thailand?

It's a question many travelers ask themselves before they leave: is a local SIM card really necessary during a stay in Thailand?

The answer is simple: Yes, today it's essential to have a mobile connection on site.

Whether via a physical SIM card or, more simply, via an eSIM, having mobile Internet access is clearly one of the elements that will condition the smooth running of your trip. In concrete terms, having a local SIM (physical or eSIM) allows you to:

  • ✅ use Google Maps to get around without getting lost,
  • ✅ order Grabtaxis in seconds,
  • ✅ check out last-minute activities or hotels,
  • ✅ search for a nearby restaurant, ATM, pharmacy or hospital,
  • ✅ send messages on WhatsApp, Messenger or Line (widely used in Thailand),
  • ✅ receive bank validation or authentication SMS messages,
  • ✅ work remotely if needed, even on the move.

Without a personal mobile connection, you're solely dependent on the Wi-Fi of hotels, cafés or restaurants, which isn't always available at the right time, isn't always stable, and sometimes isn't very secure. This can quickly become a constraint when you're on the move, in transport, on excursions or in less touristy areas.

That's why it's highly recommended to travel with a dedicated mobile connection solution. Today, the eSIM is often the simplest and most practical solution: no need to find a store on site, no physical card to insert, no risk of losing your French SIM and activation directly from your phone.

Whether it's a local SIM card or an eSIM, the most important thing is to have an active mobile connection as soon as you arrive. This is clearly one of the elements that will save you time, avoid unnecessary stress... and simplify your life throughout your stay in Thailand.

How to choose the right SIM card for Thailand?

Not all SIM cards are created equal, and choosing the wrong option can quickly lead to frustration: not enough data, unstable network, too short validity or complicated activation. To avoid this, here are the main criteria to consider when choosing your SIM card (or eSIM) for Thailand 👇

1) The amount of data

This is the number one criterion. For a typical trip, most uses consume data:

  • gPS navigation (Google Maps),
  • social networks,
  • light streaming (YouTube, TikTok),
  • whatsApp / FaceTime online calls.

For a stay of :

  • 7 to 10 days → 5 to 10 GB may be sufficient,
  • 2 to 3 weeks → 10 to 20 GB are more comfortable,
  • more than one month or intensive use / work → unlimited data or large volume recommended.

2) Network coverage

Thailand has very good mobile networks, but not all operators cover the same areas.

If you're only staying in Bangkok or the major cities, almost all networks work well. If you're planning to travel to the north (Chiang Mai, Pai), south (islands, more remote areas) or off the ultra-tourist circuits, you'd be better off with a solution offering solid national 4G / 5G coverage.

3) Package validity period

Some SIM cards are valid for 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc.

Always check :

  1. that the duration corresponds to your stay,
  2. that the card is not activated too early (before your departure),
  3. and that it remains valid until the end of your trip.

4) Ease of activation

It's a point that's often underestimated... and yet crucial.

When you get there, you may be tired after a long flight, with no Wi-Fi, no Thai, and no desire to deal with complicated activation. A good solution is :

  • activate quickly,
  • on arrival,
  • without lengthy administrative procedures,
  • nor a mandatory visit to the boutique.

This is also where dematerialized solutions such as eSIM come into their own.

5) Compatibility with your smartphone

Before choosing, it is important to check :

  • your phone is unlocked (any operator),
  • that it is compatible with the frequency bands used in Thailand,
  • and, if you choose an eSIM, that your model supports it.

6) Physical SIM or eSIM: which approach suits you best?

  • Physical SIM card: requires you to find a point of sale, open your phone and remove your current SIM.
  • eSIM: can be installed remotely via a QR code, without any hardware manipulation or loss of your main SIM, and can be ready even before you leav

👉 If you prefer simplicity, speed and comfort, eSIM is clearly the most practical solution for most travelers today.

Where to buy a SIM card for Thailand?

At the airport

This is the most visible option... but not the most advantageous.

Airport kiosks often offer package deals:

  • more expensive than average,
  • with limited data volumes,
  • and inflexible offers.

They're handy for emergencies, but they're clearly not the ideal solution if you want the best value for money or real freedom of choice.

Operator stores

You can also visit the official stores of the mobile operators present throughout the cities.

Advantages :

  • ✅ good networks,
  • ✅ wide choice of packages.

Disadvantages :

  • ❌ sometimes long waiting times,
  • ❌ formalities (passport, registration),
  • ❌ activation not always immediate,
  • ❌ language barrier possible outside tourist areas.

7-Eleven or FamilyMart convenience stores

These mini-markets are ubiquitous in Thailand, and sometimes sell prepaid SIM cards.

One solution:

  • simple,
  • fast,
  • but often limited in choice of packages and data volume.

Top 3 telephone operators for Thailand

AIS: The benchmark for coverage

AIS is the country's incumbent operator and has the most extensive network in the country.

It is particularly appreciated for its ability to :

  • cover both major cities and more remote areas,
  • maintain a stable connection even in transit,
  • offer reliable Internet access even outside tourist centers.

TrueMove H: The best choice for performance

TrueMove H is designed for users looking for a fast, smooth connection.

Its network is renowned for :

  • offer excellent 4G and 5G speeds,
  • offer a comfortable experience for streaming, video calls or telecommuting,
  • high performance in large cities and dense urban areas.

DTAC: The most user-oriented operator

What sets DTAC apart is its service-oriented approach.

It is appreciated for :

  • the simplicity of its prepaid offers,
  • its clear interfaces (website and mobile applications),
  • accessible customer support, including in English.

Thai SIM card: What are the alternatives?

If you don't want to use a traditional local SIM card, there are several other ways to stay connected in Thailand. Each has its advantages... and its limitations. Here's an overview of the main alternatives.

eSIM for Thailand

Today, eSIM is the simplest and most flexible alternative to a physical SIM card. If your smartphone is compatible, you can :

  • buy your package directly online,
  • receive the eSIM by e-mail within minutes of purchase,
  • install it by scanning a QR code,
  • and be connected as soon as you arrive, without having to go to a store.

You can choose from different providers, durations and data volumes to suit your needs. For travelers who use a lot of Internet (browsing, streaming, working remotely), eSIM offers with a high or even unlimited data volume are often the most comfortable.

It's the most practical way to avoid local formalities and keep your French SIM active.

Pocket Wi-Fi (portable router)

Pocket Wi-Fi is a small box that you rent and that creates a personal Wi-Fi network around you.

Advantages :

  • several devices can be connected at the same time,
  • you don't have to install anything on your phone.

Disadvantages :

  • you need to think about transporting and recharging it,
  • it may be bulky or fragile,
  • and rental is often more expensive than a SIM or eSIM for an entire stay.

This is an interesting solution, especially for groups or families who want to share a single connection.

Data roaming

Roaming allows you to use your usual package abroad by connecting to local networks.

The problem is :

  • data is often billed out of the package,
  • rates can be very high,
  • and the bill can quickly rise without you even realizing it.

It's a one-off solution, but not generally suitable for daily use when traveling.

Your operator's international pass

Some operators offer temporary "travel" or "international" options.

This allows :

  • to keep your number,
  • to have a small volume of data included,
  • at a cost that is often lower than traditional roaming.

However, these passes are generally more expensive than local solutions or eSIMs, with more limited data volumes.

SIM card or eSIM: Which to choose for a trip to Thailand?

Between the physical SIM card and the eSIM, both solutions offer Internet access in Thailand. The difference lies mainly in **simplicity, flexibility and user experience**. Here's how to choose the best solution for your trip.

The physical SIM card

This is the "classic" solution, used for years.

Advantages :

  • ✅ works with virtually all unlocked phones,
  • ✅ widely available on site,
  • ✅ sometimes very wide choice of packages.

Disadvantages :

  • ❌ requires a purchase once on site,
  • ❌ often involves showing your passport and completing formalities,
  • ❌ forces you to remove your main SIM card,
  • ❌ risk of loss or breakage,
  • ❌ activation sometimes takes longer than expected.

It's a good option if you like to manage everything on the spot, have the time and are comfortable with local procedures.

ESIM

ESIM is a digital SIM card integrated directly into your smartphone.

Advantages :

  • ✅ 100% online purchasing and installation,
  • ✅ quick activation via QR code,
  • ✅ no need to open your phone,
  • ✅ you keep your main SIM active,
  • ✅ you can be connected as soon as you land.

Disadvantages :

  • ❌ requires an eSIM-compatible phone,
  • ❌ choice sometimes more limited depending on very old models.

It's recommended for its simplicity, speed and comfort.
