Connected watch with eSIM

What is an eSIM for a connected watch?

An eSIM (for embedded SIM) is a dematerialized SIM card, directly integrated into the connected watch's hardware. Unlike a physical SIM card that is manually inserted into a smartphone, the eSIM is remotely programmable by a mobile operator, via a simple profile download.

In the case of an eSIM connected watch, this technology enables the watch to connect directly to the mobile network (4G/5G), without needing to be permanently linked to a smartphone via Bluetooth.

In concrete terms, this means that your watch can :

  • make and receive calls,
  • send and receive messages,
  • use connected applications (GPS, streaming, payments, notifications, etc.), even when your phone is not nearby.

The watch thus becomes a autonomous device, capable of operating independently on the mobile network, just like a smartphone... but in wrist format.

The difference between a Bluetooth watch and an eSIM watch

There are two main categories of connected watches:

Watch typeNetwork connectionPhone autonomy
Bluetooth WatchVia smartphone onlyTotally phone-dependent
Watch eSIMDirect mobile connection (4G/5G)Can stand alone

An eSIM watch therefore embeds a true secondary mobile line, often attached to your main package, enabling it to stay connected wherever there's a network.

To remember: A eSIM connected watch is a smartwatch with a built-in SIM card, enabling it to connect to the mobile network without the need for a smartphone, offering far greater freedom and autonomy than conventional models.

Why use an eSIM for your connected watch?

The question is not so much whether eSIM is "better", but whether it is useful for your use. An eSIM watch doesn't just bring more functionality: it changes the relationship between you, your watch and your phone.

Where a classic watch remains a "remote screen" of the smartphone, an eSIM watch becomes an autonomous access point to the digital world. And this difference only makes sense in certain contexts.

Who is the eSIM connected watch designed for?

The eSIM connected watch is not aimed at "everyone". Above all, it responds to concrete situations where the smartphone becomes a constraint.

  • When the phone is cumbersome: during a jog, a sports session, a walk, a quick outing... the watch lets you stay in touch without carrying an extra object.
  • When the phone is socially inappropriate: in meetings, appointments, in a professional setting, looking at your phone can be perceived as intrusive or impolite. The watch allows you to filter out the essentials, discreetly.
  • When the phone isn't immediately accessible: when traveling, on the move, in a bag, a suitcase or even left at a hotel, the watch allows you to maintain a minimum of frictionless connectivity.
  • When innovation is a pleasure in itself: some users like to test new uses, explore the possibilities of technology and push back the limits of the "all smartphone". The eSIM watch then becomes an object of experimentation as much as a practical tool.

What are the advantages of an eSIM-compatible smartwatch?

1) It eliminates "dead zones" in your connectivity

Even without a phone:

  • you stay in touch,
  • you can receive important alerts,
  • you have access to a minimal layer of the Internet.

This reduces the stress of "missing out on something important", while at the same time lightening the physical load.

2) It transforms the watch into a truly autonomous tool

The watch is no longer a simple relay, but becomes capable of :

  • manage calls,
  • guidance via GPS,
  • pay,
  • play music,
  • send data.

This opens the door to "micro", fast, contextual uses, which sometimes replace the smartphone rather than simply complementing it.

3) It improves attentional control

Paradoxically, being more connected can make you **less distracted**: you filter notifications, only take your phone out when necessary, and avoid falling into endless scrolling.

The watch becomes a selective **door** rather than a permanent open door.

4) The real compromise: the battery

This gain in functional autonomy comes at the price of a physical constraint: a cellular connection consumes much more power than a simple Bluetooth link.

The more you use :

  • the mobile network,
  • gPS,
  • streaming,
  • calls,

the greater the drop in autonomy.

Which ecosystem to choose for an eSIM connected watch?

Choosing an eSIMconnected watch is more than just choosing a design or a feature: it's above all choosing the software ecosystem that will define your day-to-day experience.

The ecosystem influences compatibility with your smartphone, fluidity of the interface, access to applications, management of integrated services (payment, voice assistant, health) and sometimes even overall autonomy.

There are three main families of eSIM watches:

  1. Apple (watchOS),
  2. Google (Wear OS),
  3. and proprietary or alternative systems offered by other manufacturers.

Apple (watchOS)

The Apple ecosystem is based on watchOS, the dedicated operating system for Apple Watches. It's a platform designed to work seamlessly with all Apple services, from iPhone to iCloud, Apple Pay, Siri or health and fitness apps.

Highlights

  • ✅ Fluid, consistent interface: all controls, gestures and interactions have been optimized for a fluid, intuitive user experience, whether viewing notifications or navigating apps.
  • ✅ Deep integration into the Apple ecosystem: iPhone, iMessage, Apple Music, Apple Pay, Health, everything is designed to work together without friction.
  • ✅ App Store rich and mature: the App Store dedicated to watchOS offers an extensive selection of applications optimized for the watch.

Limits

  • ❌ Compatibility restricted: a watchOS watch only works with an iPhone, which excludes all Android users.
  • ❌ Often premium prices: Apple Watches are generally positioned in a higher price range, from around 399 $ to nearly 999 $ depending on model and finish.

Google (Wear OS)

The Google universe is based on Wear OS, a mobile platform developed for smartwatches by Google, often in partnership with numerous manufacturers. It offers more open compatibility and integrated services leveraging the Google ecosystem.

Highlights

  • ✅ Wider compatibility: Wear OS works with Android and (to a lesser extent) iOS, although the experience is best with Android.
  • ✅ Access to Google services: voice assistant Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Pay, health tracking integrated with Google Fitness... all enrich everyday use.
  • ✅ Open system: unlike Apple, Wear OS is used by different brands (Samsung, Google Pixel Watch, Mobvoi/TicWatch, etc.), giving more choice in terms of design, features and price.

Limits

  • ❌ Variable battery life depending on model: some Wear OS devices offer battery life of a day or sometimes more, but this is highly dependent on the model and software optimization.
  • ❌ Limited iOS experience: although compatible with iPhones, some features are bridled when you don't have an Android device.

In terms of price, Wear OS watches are generally found in the range from around $249 to 799 $, with variations depending on brand, materials and on-board sensors.

Wear OS is an interesting option if you're looking for flexibility, extended compatibility and integrated Google services, especially with an Android smartphone.

Other manufacturers

Finally, several brands offer eSIM connected watches with their own operating system or variants tailored to their objectives: autonomy, price, advanced health tracking or ease of use.

Examples of alternative systems:

  • HarmonyOS (Huawei): often offers solid autonomy and an experience focused on health and connectivity within the Huawei ecosystem.
  • RTOS or lightweight OS from certain brands (Amazfit, Garmin, etc.): these systems don't seek to compete with watchOS or Wear OS in terms of applications, but they do offer much superior autonomy and highly optimized sports/outdoor tracking.
  • Specific proprietary OS (some child- or safety-oriented connected models): adapted to specific uses, with simple interfaces and targeted functions.

Highlights

  • ✅ Autonomy often better than heavy platforms, as the OS is optimized for reduced power consumption.
  • ✅ Price/performance ratio is often attractive: interesting models can be found at around 199 $ to 599 $ depending on features and brand.

Limits

  • ❌ Smaller ecosystems: fewer third-party applications, fewer integrated services compared with Apple or Google platforms.
  • ❌ Variable interoperability with certain smartphones or external services.

Where can I get an eSIM for a connected watch?

To use a connected watch with eSIM, it is essential to use a compatible mobile operator, which provides the eSIM profile enabling the watch to connect to the 4G/5G network.

In France, not all operators yet offer specific services for connected watches. The situation today is as follows.

Operators offering eSIM for connected watches

  • Orange offers a dedicated option for connected watches, generally called *option* eSIM Watch or equivalent, allowing the watch to be associated with the main mobile plan.
  • SFR also offers a specific option for connected watches (often called *option* Connected Watch), which allows the watch to be used autonomously while sharing the number or data of the main package.
  • Free Mobile now also offers a solution for activating an eSIM on a connected watch, either as an option or as a secondary line attached to the main package.

Today, these three operators allow you to activate an eSIM directly on a compatible smartwatch, with varying terms and conditions depending on the model of watch and the plan you have.

How do I install an eSIM on a connected watch?

Theinstallation of an eSIM on a connected watchis a simple procedure, carried out almost entirely from the smartphone associated with the watch. It involves downloading an eSIM profile supplied by the operator, then installing it on the watch via the manufacturer's application.

Here are the general steps to follow:

1) Receive activation code from operator

After subscribing to an eSIM option or package for a connected watch, the operator provides a ** activation code**, usually in one of these forms:

  • a QR code sent by e-mail or available in the customer area,
  • or a activation code to be entered manually.

This code contains the information needed to associate the watch with the mobile network.

2) Check that the watch is properly paired with the smartphone

Before installation, the watch must be :

  • on,
  • connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth,
  • and associated with the manufacturer's official application (e.g. Watch on iPhone, Wear OS on Android, Galaxy Wearable, etc.).

Without this initial connection, the eSIM cannot be installed.

3) Open the watch application on your smartphone

Installation is performed via the watch's dedicated application:

  • Apple Watch → application Watch on iPhone
  • Wear OS watches → application Wear OS or equivalent
  • Samsung → application Galaxy Wearable
  • Other brands → corresponding proprietary application

4) Add eSIM package

At this point, the application suggests adding a new mobile package.

There are two possible methods:

  • Scan the QR code provided by the operator with your smartphone's camera,
  • or enter the activation code manually if the QR code is not available.
  • Once the code has been validated, the eSIM profile is downloaded and automatically transferred to the watch.

5) Finalize activation

Just follow the instructions on the screen:

  • accept the conditions,
  • confirm activation,
  • wait for synchronization with the operator's network.

This usually takes a few minutes. Once completed, the watch displays a network indicator (4G/LTE), a sign that the mobile connection is active.

What you need to know before installation

  • The watch must be compatible with eSIM and LTE, otherwise the option will not be offered.
  • The smartphone must be connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile) during installation.
  • Some activations require the smartphone to be in the same country as the watch, and the operator to be supported locally.

How to choose the right eSIM-compatible SmartWatch?

Not all eSIM watches are created equal, and above all, not all are suitable for the same purposes. Here are the essential criteria to check to make the right choice, without making a mistake.

1) Check compatibility with your smartphone

This is point number one.

  • iPhone → prefer Apple Watch (Cellular)
  • Android → favor Wear OS (Samsung, Pixel, TicWatch, etc.)

A watch can look great on paper, but lose 50% of its appeal if it's not perfectly integrated with your phone.

2) Identify your main use

Just ask yourself this question: What do I really need the watch for?

  • Sport/outdoor → Accurate GPS, water-resistant, good battery life
  • Professional / everyday use → calls, reliable notifications, comfort, discretion
  • Travel / mobility → good range + stable LTE
  • Tech / gadget → rich applications, integrated services

The right model is the one that excels in your dominant use, not the one that promises "a bit of everything".

3) Look at actual (not theoretical) autonomy

An eSIM watch consumes more power than a Bluetooth watch.

  • If you want several days' autonomy → avoid models with high LTE consumption.
  • If you're willing to recharge every day → you can opt for highly connected models.

The "smarter" the watch, the more energy it consumes.

4) Check your operator's eSIM availability

Before you buy :

  • Check that your operator supports the watch;
  • Check that the exact model is compatible (LTE / Cellular versions only).

5) Define a budget in line with your expectations

  • 200/300 $ → simple eSIM models, sometimes more oriented towards sport or autonomy.
  • 400/600 $ → good balance of features / comfort / connectivity.
  • 700 $ and more → premium models, materials, screen, advanced integration.

Don't pay for features you'll never use.
