Airalo vs. Holafly: Which One Is Better in 2026?
We compared Airalo and Holafly based on 10 key criteria. The verdict is clear: Holafly wins 6-4, but Airalo remains a viable option for four specific use cases.

Are you hesitating to buy an Airalo eSIM for your next trip? You’re right to do your research before pulling out your credit card. Airalo has been a major player in the travel eSIM market since 2019, with over 10 million users and coverage in more than 200 destinations. But being a leader doesn’t mean they’re unbeatable, especially in 2026 when competition is fierce. We’ve combed through their catalog, checked the actual prices, read thousands of Trustpilot reviews, and compared them with alternatives on the market. By the end of this article, you’ll know whether Airalo is right for you, or if a solution like voilà better fits your travel profile.

Airalo is a travel eSIM provider founded in Singapore in 2019. It is the oldest general-purpose player in the market and also one of the largest: the brand claims to have over 10 million users by 2026 and ranks among the industry leaders.
Founded by Bahadir Ozdemir and Abraham Burak, Airalo was one of the first platforms to make travel eSIMs accessible to the general public. Today, the numbers speak for themselves:
Using an Airalo eSIM is simple and easy. Download the Airalo app (iOS or Android), select the country or region you’re traveling to, purchase your plan directly from the app, and install the eSIM using a QR code or via direct iOS installation (no QR code required). The eSIM remains inactive until you arrive in your destination country. It activates automatically as soon as your phone connects to a local partner network. You keep your main SIM card for calls and texts on your home number, and use Airalo exclusively for data.
Airalo offers three main types of plans:
Most plans offer durations of 7, 15, or 30 days, and some even go up to 365 days, with data allowances ranging from 1 GB to 50 GB, plus unlimited options in certain regions.

Let's be honest: Airalo's dominance in the market isn't a coincidence. The brand has several real strengths that it would be dishonest to ignore.
This is Airalo’s number one selling point. With covering 201 countries and regions according to the latest data from eSIMs.io, Airalo is one of the providers with the widest global coverage. You can purchase an eSIM for major destinations (Japan, the U.S., Thailand) as well as for less common destinations (Iran, Afghanistan, Cape Verde, Uzbekistan).
The Airalo app is consistently cited as one of the best in the industry. The ratings speak for themselves: (4.7/5 on the App Store),, and (4.6/5 on Google Play),. The interface is smooth, the real-time data usage tracking works well, and the ability to install it directly on iOS without a QR code is a real convenience.
Airalo offers 24/7 support through several channels: in-app chat, email ([email protected]), WhatsApp (+1 909 505 1219), and an online form. Communication is primarily in English, with an AI chatbot handling initial inquiries and a human agent stepping in if necessary.
Airmoney is Airalo's loyalty program: with every purchase, you earn credits that can be used toward your future data plans. For frequent travelers, this is a real bonus that can add up to 5–10% in savings over the course of a year.
Let's move on to the sticking points. There are fewer of them than with other players, but they are very real.
The #1 complaint about Airalo in 2026. According to data from eSIMs.io, Airalo has an average price of $25.96 per plan, compared with only $14.33 at Redteago or $15.27 at GoMoWorld. The provider ranks 22nd out of 38 providers by average price. On top destinations like Japan, the gap is very visible: a 1 GB Airalo plan costs around $4.00 / €4.50, compared with €1.30 at voilà, i.e. 3 times cheaper at equivalent volume and duration.
The Airalo app interface is available in 12 languages, including French. However, human support is only available in English. For a French speaker stranded at Narita Airport with an eSIM that won’t activate, this limitation can quickly become a major source of stress. Several recent Trustpilot reviews highlight this issue, particularly when the AI chatbot fails to address the question.
Airalo does offer unlimited plans for certain destinations, but be aware: all these plans are subject to a fair use policy. In practice, after using between 1 and 10 GB at full speed (depending on the destination), your speed is reduced (throttled) until the end of the validity period. It’s unlimited, sure, but not at the speed you might expect.
A more technical but important point: according to tests by eSIMs.io, Airalo traffic may route through a distant country before accessing the web. For example, during a test in Vietnam, traffic routed through Singapore, adding latency. This can result in:
Airalo accepts multiple currencies, but the dollar remains the default currency. For a European paying in euros, this can result in bank conversion fees of 1% to 3%, plus exchange rate fluctuations. In contrast to voilà displays prices directly in euros, with no intermediary.

Let's take a look at the actual prices, based on verified data for each destination.
According to the latest official data compiled by eSIMs.io (October 2025), the Airalo lineup is as follows:
Here is an overview of prices for a few popular destinations:
| Destination | Volume | Duration | Airalo Prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan (Moshi Moshi) | 1 GB | 7 days | $4.50 |
| Japan (Moshi Moshi) | 3 GB | 15 days | $11.50 |
| Japan (Moshi Moshi) | 5 GB | 30 days | $16.00 |
| Japan (Moshi Moshi) | 10 GB | 30 days | $26.00 |
| Japan (Moshi Moshi) | 20 GB | 30 days | $20.50 |
| Europe (Eurolink) | 3 GB | 30 days | ≈ $13.00 |
These prices change regularly depending on promotions. Be sure to check them on the Airalo app before purchasing.
Airalo advertises its unlimited plans, but always read the fine print: "Unlimited" is actually capped by a fair usage policy. Beyond a threshold of 1 to 10 GB (depending on the destination), the data speed is significantly reduced. For truly unlimited data without throttling, providers like Holafly are generally more transparent, even if they’re more expensive overall.
Let's compare Airalo's ratings across the major platforms:
| Platform | Note | Number of reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot France | 4 out of 5 | 22,662 reviews |
| Apple App Store | 4.7 out of 5 | n.a. |
| Google Play Store | 4.6 out of 5 | n.a. |
The grades are solid. But as always, the averages mask two contrasting realities.
What users love about Airalo:
Alongside the positive reviews, certain themes recur frequently on Trustpilot France in 2026:
Negative feedback remains in the minority (about 10–15% of reviews), but it consistently focuses on these specific issues.

Airalo works on all eSIM-compatible smartphones, which means most recent models:
The process for setting up an Airalo eSIM follows a standard procedure:
Activation happens automatically when your phone connects to a local partner network. It takes less than 5 minutes in total for most users.
Airalo is a good option, but it’s not the only one. voilà—a French alternative that plays to a different set of strengths: unbeatable prices, support in French, and premium local networks (such as NTT Docomo in Japan).
| Criterion | Airalo | here it is |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Singapore (2019) | France |
| Cover | 201+ destinations | 190+ countries and territories |
| Price for 1 GB in Japan | $4.00 ($4.50) | $1.30 |
| Price for 10 GB in Japan | $26.00 | $8.50 |
| Price for 20 GB in Japan | $20.50 | $14.80 |
| Japan Network | SoftBank / KDDI | NTT Docomo (best coverage) |
| Phone number / Text message | No, data only | No, data only |
| User rating | 4 out of 5 (22,662 Trustpilot reviews) | 4.7 / 5 (100,000+ reviews) |
Let's be honest, Airalo has some real advantages:
This is where "voilà" has the edge, especially for French speakers:
After a thorough analysis, here is our clear-cut opinion.
Ultimately, Airalo remains a solid and reputable player in 2026. But for French-speaking travelers looking to maximize their budget and enjoy greater linguistic comfort, voilà—offers a clearly better fit. Give it a try on your next trip, especially if you’re heading to Asia.
